The high seismicity of this region stems from the continuous subduction of the Indian tectonic plate beneath the Eurasian plate. This tectonic activity results in accumulated stress along the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT), periodically released in the form of devastating earthquakes (Bilham, 2004).
